Does your child need a little extra help with school? Foster Futures Together (FFT) connects motivated high school students who serve as tutors to K-8 students in foster care. Once enrolled in the program, youth in care will have access to weekly free virtual tutoring sessions, in which FFT’s high school volunteers can help with homework problems, exam questions, and a general understanding of course material.
Peer-to-Peer Help
Foster Futures Together is spearheaded by Neha Vontela, a high school junior. When she was younger, her school offered a peer tutoring program that was a huge help to her. Since then, she became a peer tutor which helped her see the benefits that student-to-student tutoring offers.
“There’s a lot of value in being taught by someone who’s only a few years older than you and has already gone through the same course material,” says Vontela. “I wanted to center Foster Futures Together on that model.”
Vontela had a teacher who had grown up in foster care and shared startling statistics about children in foster care and education. She couldn’t believe that only one-third of students in care in Arizona graduate from high school and only 3% finish college. After doing her own research, she decided she wanted to help change those numbers, ultimately developing Foster Futures Together.
People Who Care
“Education is so, so important, and kids should never give up on learning. There is always a support system of people who care and support you every step of the way,” said Vontela. “The work of AFFCF and the creation of Foster Futures Together is proof of that.”
