In the world of foster care, the transition to adulthood can be a challenging and daunting process. For many young people aging out of the system without any supports in place, finding stable housing is a critical need. Amaya’s story is a testament to the resilience and determination of these young individuals, and it underscores the importance of providing support and resources to help them succeed.

An Urgent Need

As a participant in Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation’s (AFFCF) Keys to Success (KTS) program, Amaya was referred to the KTS housing and resource specialist because she was in urgent need of securing housing. Amaya had a one-year-old son and had just given birth to a daughter, who was born two months prematurely and was still in the NICU at a local hospital. Despite the overwhelming circumstances, Amaya faced her challenges with a positive attitude and determination to create a stable home for her family.

Understanding the urgency of her situation, her housing and resource specialist took Amaya on several apartment tours, ensuring that they found a place that was not only within her budget but also had the essential amenities she needed. After some searching, they found an apartment that met her criteria, and AFFCF supported her through the application process. Securing approval for housing startup fees was a crucial step in easing the financial burden of moving in. Through Keys to Success, AFFCF granted an award for a gift card and assisted with her first month’s rent, providing much-needed financial relief.

Additional Resources

One of the immediate concerns Amaya expressed was the need for a bed for her newborn. Recognizing the importance of this, the housing and resource specialist was fortunate enough to locate a resource that could provide and deliver a bassinet and a pack-and-play for her little ones. This ensured that her newborn daughter and her one-year-old son had safe and comfortable sleeping arrangements.

Despite the exhausting demands of commuting back and forth to the hospital to breastfeed her preemie while caring for her one-year-old son, Amaya has shown incredible strength and perseverance. Her determination to provide for her children and maintain a positive outlook is truly inspiring.

Amaya’s journey highlights the vital role that housing and support services play in helping young adults who are aging out of foster care. By helping youth find affordable, stable housing, providing financial assistance, and connecting them to essential resources, we can help youth build a foundation for a brighter future.
