Isaac’s Story

Featured image for post: Isaac’s Story

Isaac lives in a high needs group home. Since he entered foster care four years ago, he has been in more placements than his CASA can count. Isaac was very traumatized as a child and he has an ongoing medical problem that eats away at his self-esteem. The medical problem also leads to bullying by his peers.

Instant Impact

When his CASA took him to an introductory tae kwon do class last year, Isaac reacted positively to the discipline and athletic activity in ways she never before had seen. The classes have made an instant impact on Isaac’s life, giving him some sense of pride in himself.

“I’m really grateful for you helping me learn tae kwon do…”

Isaac is committed to learning tae kwon do, asking for more lessons. He made a goal to one day becoming a black belt. He’s well on his way, as he recently earned his yellow belt.

To AFFCF donors, Isaac says, “I am really grateful for you helping me learn tae kwon do – thank you very much.”

Benefits of Childhood Activities

Childhood activities are an important part of shaping who we are and how we relate to others and the world in general. According to the National Center for Youth Law, “If any children can benefit from extracurricular activities, it is foster youth. Extracurricular activities address three areas of concern for foster youth, namely academic achievement, behavioral problems and identity development.”

Being in foster care is hard. Arizona Friends of Foster Children is committed to creating opportunities to build self-esteem and empower children and youth in foster care by funding services to enrich their life experiences and ensure their successful transition to adulthood. Your support gives kids in care the opportunity to be just like every other kid, whether it’s going to summer camp, playing a team sport or learning to play an instrument.
