Growing Up In Foster Care
Behind FFHFN Clothing is founder Chris Benford, who spent a part of his childhood in foster care. Chris came into care around the age of 4 or 5 years, along with his siblings.
“I was fortunate to have my nana take me into her home,” says Chris.
He mentions that his siblings mostly stayed together in foster care, but one of his brothers was adopted and now lives in California. Since then, Chris has reconnected with his brother and learned that he is doing well.
When speaking of living in foster care, Chris says he has embraced his experience and is grateful for his family members who cared for him.
“Being in foster care taught me to keep my loved ones close and to remember who has always been there for me,” Chris says. “I also knew that I had to work even harder to reach my goals because I didn’t always have a lot.
A Dream Come True
Creating FFHFN is a dream come true for Chris. At the tender age of 10, he told his brother and his cousins that he wanted to start his own clothing company and be his own boss.
“I’ve always been a creator at heart and was lucky enough a couple of years ago to be in a position that allowed me to finally launch the company.” Chris adds, “It is less about proving something and more about making a life for myself doing something I am truly passionate about.”
FFHFN is the realization of Chris’ vision to give people a positive, creative vibe that allows them to thrive. He knows from personal experience that it’s not always easy, but he believes in creating a community built on positivity and lifting each other up.
A Message to Kids in Care
Chris has a message for young people living in foster care now:
“Stay focused on the things you enjoy and care about. Don’t ever let a bad situation get you down and don’t let it influence the outcome of your life. More importantly, you deserve the best for yourself and being in foster care is not your fault. Sometimes things just happen a certain way, but it’s up to you to make the best of it and learn from it.”
