Scholar Spotlight: Rico

With a new semester under way, AFFCF is currently funding 73 college students who aged out of foster care and are attending universities and community colleges statewide. This month, we’re pleased to introduce Rico, a newly awarded scholar for the Spring 2020 semester, who tells his story in his own words.

As a foster youth with no stable place, I have found purpose, meaning and fulfillment through education. It is because of this that I wish to inspire the very same thing in students. Education is the means to these pursuits. It is because of this that I seek to achieve my doctorate in philosophy to become a professor of philosophy.

I feel so blessed to have received the AFFCF scholarship. I am finishing my associate degree from Paradise Valley Community College this semester and can’t wait until the fall to begin my journey toward completing my Bachelor’s degree and beyond at ASU West.

I couldn’t be happier. What a wonderful way to begin the New Year!

Now’s a great time to make your Foster Care Tax Credit Donation to AFFCF and give the gift of education to a youth aging out of foster care. You can get a dollar-for-dollar credit on your Arizona state taxes, up to $500 for individuals and up to $1,000 for couples. Plus, you can still claim your gift on your 2019 state taxes.
